Closely akin to the process
of coaching is the world of assessments. The study of human behavior
has existed since the first man began to wonder what other men were
likely to do in any given situation and then why men were likely
to do that. The study has grown and evolved and become more sophisticated
and more empirical as time has passed. Nonetheless, the purpose
and the process remain the same as when the first man began to wonder
if behavior could be predicted and why one behaves as one does.
Today, assessments are used as predictors of behavior and predictors
of success or likely failure in specific jobs with highly defined
bundles of tasks. Corporations rely on such indicators and routinely
administer a battery of assessments to incoming new hires to best
place these individuals in situations where they have the greatest
likelihood for a successful experience. Indeed, I am frequently
called upon to coach individuals in a corporation, and when I
really get into the dynamics of the work environment, it becomes
apparent that the employee is mis-placed in view of his/her abilities
and interests.
I am skilled as an administrator of the assessments provided
by Target Training International located in Scottsdale, Arizona.
As an administrator and a distributor of these instruments, I
use them in my practice as the need arises. Many administrators
use this branch of the coaching world as a business in and of
itself, providing quantity assessment packages to HR departments
of corporations for their internal use. If an HR department would
like to use such instruments for screening in their hiring process,
or as additional data- gathering tools in employee counseling,
I would be pleased to provide access to the instruments and train
the administers in the correct use of the instruments.
After coaching for a number of years, I do not use any assessments
with new clients until I determine that the use of an instrument
would warrant taking the time and effort. Many clients have been
with me a number of years and I have never used assessments with
them. Each situation is different and each calls for a coaching
evaluation of what would work best for that client. Assessments
have proven to be invaluable in some situations and worthless
in others. It’s much like a medical doctor. There is no
one-size-fits-all bandage.
