| Individual coaching is
at once quite simple and at the same time quite convoluted by definition.
Let me see if I can clear some of this definition business up for
you. Because all human interaction can be seen as a one-on-one 'meeting
of the minds' it can be said that all coaching is individual coaching.
But individual coaching, in the context we are now focusing, means
that i am engaged to coach an individual with no affiliations to
companies, groups, or businesses in any fashion. We work on issues
that individual raises having nothing to do with company performance,
personal company advancement, or bonus achievement. That is coaching
of an individual. It is coaching an individual to move from point
A to a desired point B through the coaching process. Therefore,
and by definition, this is coaching of an individual or individual
coaching.
Individual coaching is quite convoluted if you say, “But
when you coach a company executive, isn't that individual coaching?”
The answer is, “Yes”, but I coach the individual within
the perspective of their corporate backdrop, and not on issues
outside the corporate interests. For example, I have been asked
on a number of occasions to assist or coach a corporate coachee
with their resume for placement outside their company. I always
decline. My allegiance is always with the company, and I preclude
myself from taking on such work. Further, in a corporate environment
I maintain that I have two clients: 1) a coaching client, or the
person with whom I work to achieve his/her stated objectives,
and 2) a business client, generally the CEO, who has hired me
to coach one of his/her direct reports. As the coaching period
begins, I take great effort to communicate to each party what
I can and cannot discuss with them. I am never at liberty to discuss
coachee-topics with the hiring party (generally the CEO). I must
maintain a relationship with both of these two separate parties,
and maintain my integrity while in the process.
Within the individual coaching relationship there is a bond and
a trust established that allows us to together accomplish something
an individual alone might not.
