Corporate, sometimes called
Executive coaching, is a burgeoning area of the coaching industry.
Why, you might ask? Simple, at the executive level one’s vision,
as evidenced by one’s strategy and tactics, is transparent
to educated Boards of Directors, sophisticated investors, pencil-sharpened
competitors, and equally-bright allies. The responsibility for the
success or failure of the enterprise rests squarely on the shoulders
of the executive charged with guiding the entity. Many executives
have come to appreciate the value added by an executive coach, and
see alignment with a trusted advisor/coach as just another tool
to which intelligent executives afford themselves. Executive
coaches are distinguished from the majority of coaches by the
tools required to coach executives. Such coaches must bring an
experience base earned in the corporate trenches with them to
the coaching engagement. A knowledge of how corporations work
is essential to the coaching of an individual within that environment.
In my experience, to be successful in the corporate environment
one must have three things:
- 1) be competent in the discipline for which one was hired,
- 2) be politically astute and know (or find out) where the
corporate skeletons are buried, and
- 3) be considered by one’s supervisor or those in positions
to promote, to bring something to the table which the corporation
does not now have, and which the higher–ups believe is
needed.
