Conferences are the most popular type of business
gathering in the world today.
Now how does one distinguish conferences from conventions? Conferences
are meetings of two or more interested parties for the purpose
of discussing matters of common concern. Conventions are meetings
of two or more interested parties for the purpose of addressing
and coming to an agreement on principles by which the members
intend to abide. It other words, it is a law- making body.
Few opportunities to speak at conventions will be presented to
professional speakers. Many opportunities will come to speakers
to speak at conferences. How a professional speaker gets booked
to speak at conferences is addressed in the section entitled,
“The Business
of Speaking.” How a speaker decides where he/she chooses
to speak is an altogether different matter. A speaker must identify
and keep in mind his/her purpose in speaking. (else why get dressed
and go out at all?) The two main purposes are to gain clients
or to gain money, or both. Once a speaker’s purpose is well
defined within his/her own mind, the decisions are easier. If
the opportunity provides one or both of your goals, you may choose
to speak or not to speak depending on how you assess the opportunity.
All situations are unique, and therefore fees are discussed on
an individual basis.
